  • CAPTION: Troupe Dahomey drummers. As non-traditional music genres such as rap and hip-hop rise in popularity, SPA Troupe Dahomey's collaboration is helping to slow the demise of indigenous Haitian culture. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: La Fleur du Chaine, Rue Capois, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: From left to right: Alens Junior Noël, Luc Cedor and Gregory Fonoz.

  • CAPTION: A member of Troupe Dahomey performs a dance called ibo, which dates from the time of slavery. The movements mimic those of slaves rushing through sugarcane fields to the hills to escape their oppressive masters, pushing the cane out of the way as they run so as not to get hurt. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: La Fleur du Chaine, Rue Capois, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Tamara Belabe .

  • CAPTION: Members of Troupe Dahomey practice a dance routine. While popular Haitian culture stresses a strong role for one's ancestors, fewer and fewer young people are being exposed to this idea owing to competing external influences. This is a trend that SPA and Troupe Dahomey are working to reverse. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: La Fleur du Chaine, Rue Capois, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Phanor Joanne and David Dunosier.

  • CAPTION: Members of Troupe Dahomey practice a dance routine. The organization was founded in 1998, with the goal of creating a platform for cultural exchange between the many influential cultures in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which borders the country to the East. It was also conceived as a means of ensuring that Haitians would not lose their traditional heritage as young people increasing turn their eyes and ears to foreign music and dance. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: La Fleur du Chaine, Rue Capois, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: From left to right (full faces visible): Louis Oldin, Jean Rose Deodine Petuelle and Marc-Elise Pierre.

  • CAPTION: Troupe Dahomey's band. When the organization's new music studio opens, it will produce modern interpretations of traditional music and distribute this to local radio stations, particularly those broadcasting close to the border with the Dominican Republic. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: La Fleur du Chaine, Rue Capois, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: From left to right: Edmond Athanose, Etienne Rose Moirie, Luc Cedor, Danoël Jeorn Worlf, Alens Junior Noël, Moril Jean Fritz and Gregory Fonoz.

  • CAPTION: Members of Troupe Dahomey practice a dance routine. At times, when the troupe is rehearsing, young people also join them in order to learn how to play the music or do the dances. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: La Fleur du Chaine, Rue Capois, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: From left to right (full faces visible): Marc-Elise Pierr, David Dunosier, Louis Oldin and Morelus Elizabeth.

  • CAPTION: Members of Troupe Dahomey practice a dance routine. Some who come to learn here have never dabbled in music or dance prior to their first exposure to Dahomey, but all are welcome. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: La Fleur du Chaine, Rue Capois, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: From left to right (full faces visible): David Dunosier, Louis Oldin and Morelus Elizabeth.

  • CAPTION: Members of Troupe Dahomey practice a dance routine. It’s not only tunes and movements that are taught, but also their histories, what they mean and how they may be interpreted. Dahomey have invited various professors to come and share about the histories of different dances. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: La Fleur du Chaine, Rue Capois, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: From left to right: Louis Oldin, David Dunosier, Jean Rose Deodine Petuelle, Merisier Ludger and Marie Dieulène.

  • CAPTION: Brass musicians in Troupe Dahomey's band. The IAF has helped Troupe Dahomey in a big way with getting its studio project off the ground. During Carnival season, there frequently aren’t enough studio spaces in Haiti, meaning that local people looking to record traditional Haitian music don’t have a place to go; this studio will make this problem a thing of the past. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: La Fleur du Chaine, Rue Capois, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Danoël Jeorn Worlf (left) and Moril Jean Fritz (right).
    IMG59578.jpg
  • CAPTION: Rose Marie Etienne sings her heart out. Like all the members of Troupe Dahomey, she is passionate about traditional Creole music. But dedication to this work of course requires finances; passion alone will not keep the organisation going. In time, Dahomey hopes to become self-sustaining through three revenue-generating projects. The studio will produce and distribute music for other artists; the dance school will charge an entrance fee for shows and concerts it hosts; and, lastly, they will contract out musical equipment. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: La Fleur du Chaine, Rue Capois, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Rose Marie Etienne.
    IMG59606.jpg
  • CAPTION: Rose Marie Etienne and the Troupe Dahomey band perform raboday, a rhythm found in rara music in which people take to the streets to make music and dance together. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: La Fleur du Chaine, Rue Capois, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Rose Marie Etienne.
    IMG59607.jpg
  • CAPTION: Danoël Jeorn Worlf plays the trumpet in Troupe Dahomey's band. In rara music, people would traditionally take to the streets to make music and dance together. This was always done far more in the countryside than in the cities. In the past, rural dwellers wouldn't even be allowed into the city. However, with the Rasin movement (of which Troupe Dahomey has been at the forefornt), people go from the city to learn from the countryside, in the process discoving enormous cultural value in their music. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: La Fleur du Chaine, Rue Capois, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Danoël Jeorn Worlf.
    IMG59610.jpg
  • CAPTION: Rose Marie Etienne sings her heart out. Her song says, "I'm an adult, but I don't live among people." This is a reference to living in slavery, and to the slaves' dehumanization by their masters. However, the ultimate message is one of liberty and independence. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: La Fleur du Chaine, Rue Capois, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Rose Marie Etienne.
    IMG59675.jpg
  • CAPTION: Troupe Dahomey's band. Troupe Dahomey currently has ten musicians. Together, they are trying to add more to their music with different instruments, particularly percussion, in order to expand their repertoire. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: La Fleur du Chaine, Rue Capois, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Moril Jean Fritz (behind) and Gregory Fonoz (in front).
    IMG59753.jpg
  • CAPTION: Philippe Pierre has been with Troupe Dahomey since its inception. He serves as maestro musician, writing music for the group and also playing guitar. In traditional music, he says he finds himself; he feels like his ancestors enter him through this music. It is through this music that he feels like a person with an identity. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA), 16 bis 2ème Impasse Lavaud, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Philippe Pierre.
    IMG59771.jpg
  • CAPTION: Tamara Belab (left) has been a dancer with Troupe Dahomey for the past ten years. She says she feels that learning traditional dance is giving value to her culture; this is what inspires her the most about being a part of Dahomey. ORGANIZATION: Troupe Dahomey / Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA). LOCATION: Sant Pont Ayiti (SPA), 16 bis 2ème Impasse Lavaud, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Tamara Belabe (left) and Marc-Elise Pierre (right).

  • CAPTION: Oganizasyon Gwoupman Kominotè Pawas Sakrekè (OGKPS) is a community collective that has been working with IAF support to renovate and modernize its bakery and cassaverie (which processes manioc into flour and tapioca pancakes) in Laviolette, Cap-Haïtien. Here, Isabelle Saintilma is peeling cassava roots, the first stage in processing it. OGKPS started as a church movement, but has since become an entrepreneurial organization that welcomes people of all faiths, and emphasizes increased economic opportunities through trainings, livelihoods creation, and inclusion of women in decision-making processes. ORGANIZATION: Organizasyon Gwoupman Kominotè Pawas Sakretè (OGKPS). LOCATION: #88 Laviolette (Monte Pa Desann), Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Isabelle Saintilma.
    IMG59833.jpg
  • CAPTION: Before milling, the peeled cassava has to be washed thoroughly. 40% of the beneficiaries of this project are women. According to Marc-Lucien Jerome, Founder and Trainer of OGKPS, "Women are our mothers and daughters, we have to give back to them; they have played a big role in our independence." ORGANIZATION: Organizasyon Gwoupman Kominotè Pawas Sakretè (OGKPS). LOCATION: #88 Laviolette (Monte Pa Desann), Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Soicina Bien-Aimé (left) and Isabelle Saintilma (right).
    IMG59860.jpg
  • CAPTION: Jean-Pierre Regel and Elino Selondieu work together as a team to mill the cassava, using a machine that crushes and grates it. The renovation and modernization of OGKPS's bakery and cassaverie is directly benefiting around 360 farmers, bread vendors, bakery workers, and other residents in and around Cap-Haïtien. ORGANIZATION: Organizasyon Gwoupman Kominotè Pawas Sakretè (OGKPS). LOCATION: #88 Laviolette (Monte Pa Desann), Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Jean-Pierre Regel (left) and Elino Selondieu (right).
    IMG59869.jpg
  • CAPTION: After milling, the cassava is put into a press so that all the moisture can be removed. Currently, the cassaverie is thriving, and plans for the adjoining bakery to open are developing apace. Once it's operational, OGKPS will produce white bread, manioc bread, and other cassava products, and will also provide manioc milling services. ORGANIZATION: Organizasyon Gwoupman Kominotè Pawas Sakretè (OGKPS). LOCATION: #88 Laviolette (Monte Pa Desann), Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Jean-Pierre Regel (left) and Elino Selondieu (right).
    IMG59893.jpg
  • CAPTION: Operating the press to squeeze all the moisture out of the cassava. The team explains that the cassava they make stands out, boasting a reputation for superior quality. One of the main reasons for this is that they don't take the starch out of the plant when they grind it. Any that is pressed out during the moisture removal process is returned later. This ensures that nutrients are retained and saves OGKPS from having to add sugar to achieve a good taste, which their competitors do. ORGANIZATION: Organizasyon Gwoupman Kominotè Pawas Sakretè (OGKPS). LOCATION: #88 Laviolette (Monte Pa Desann), Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Jean-Pierre Regel (left) and Elino Selondieu (right).

  • CAPTION: Sieving the dry cassava. With the generator visible in the background, which was financed by IAF, OGKPS is able to fulfill more orders than before because it can now operate through the night. This also ensures that products are fresh for sale first thing in the morning. ORGANIZATION: Organizasyon Gwoupman Kominotè Pawas Sakretè (OGKPS). LOCATION: #88 Laviolette (Monte Pa Desann), Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Elino Selondieu.
    IMG59913.jpg
  • CAPTION: Elino Selondieu passes the dry cassava through a sieve to get rid of any big lumps. These are then sold to poorer people whose access to basic nutrition is less, at a low asking price. Elino says that the nutrient content of the cassava products produced here is so high that he feels like he's selling medicine. This makes him feel very proud. ORGANIZATION: Organizasyon Gwoupman Kominotè Pawas Sakretè (OGKPS). LOCATION: #88 Laviolette (Monte Pa Desann), Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Elino Selondieu.

  • CAPTION: The cassava is now flattened on an iron plate, and cooked by charcoal burning underneath. OGKPS meets every Wednesday for coordinating committees in local areas, and holds a general assembly meeting every two years. Various types of training on farming and business and enterprise happen frequently. ORGANIZATION: Organizasyon Gwoupman Kominotè Pawas Sakretè (OGKPS). LOCATION: #88 Laviolette (Monte Pa Desann), Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Pierre Auguste.
    IMG59923.jpg
  • CAPTION: Charcoal burns under a red hot iron plate on which the cassava has been spread. OGKPS contend that they preserve the ‘real cassava’ through their process, keeping it tasty by ensuring that nothing that is integral to the vegetable is lost. ORGANIZATION: Organizasyon Gwoupman Kominotè Pawas Sakretè (OGKPS). LOCATION: #88 Laviolette (Monte Pa Desann), Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: N/A.
    IMG59929.jpg
  • CAPTION: Pierre Auguste scores the finished product into squares. OGKPS is reinvesting the profits generated back into the cassaverie and, in time, will do so with its bakery as well so that they will become self-sustaining. It also intends to launch additional community revenue-based projects in the future. ORGANIZATION: Organizasyon Gwoupman Kominotè Pawas Sakretè (OGKPS). LOCATION: #88 Laviolette (Monte Pa Desann), Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Pierre Auguste.

  • CAPTION: Elicita Josephe fills her cloth bag to fulfil an order that has come from Miami. Orders have even been received from New Zealand, showing how nutritious and valuable a commodity this is considered to be. Women are the primary vendors of what is produced here. After each sale, they return gross revenues to OGKPS and then collect a 15 percent commission on their total sales at the end of each month. ORGANIZATION: Organizasyon Gwoupman Kominotè Pawas Sakretè (OGKPS). LOCATION: #88 Laviolette (Monte Pa Desann), Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Elicita Josephe.
    IMG59942.jpg
  • CAPTION: In one deft movement, Pierre Auguste flips the cassava pancake over so that the reverse side can be baked. According to Saint Fleur Abellard, a farmer and community leader, “We eat a lot of cassava here in Haiti, so it's a good thing that this cassaverie is here. We have a trustworthy place that both ensures us safe food for our children and also improves our livelihoods.” ORGANIZATION: Organizasyon Gwoupman Kominotè Pawas Sakretè (OGKPS). LOCATION: #88 Laviolette (Monte Pa Desann), Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Pierre Auguste.
    IMG59947.jpg
  • CAPTION: OGKPS has been credited with doing much for this community's upliftment. The cassaverie has brought money to the area and helped to improve livelihoods in a country where the majority are unemployed. The organization has additionally worked with community leaders to achieve electrification not only of the cassaverie but also the surrounding homes, while they have also worked with local government to get a nearby ravine (pictured here), which used to flood regularly, reinforced against erosion at times of heavy rainfall. ORGANIZATION: Organizasyon Gwoupman Kominotè Pawas Sakretè (OGKPS). LOCATION: Zetiye, Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: From left to right: Marc-Lucien Jerôme, Renard Etienne and Saint Fleur Abellard.
    IMG59962.jpg
  • CAPTION: OGKPS has been purchasing its ingredients and supplies from local farmers until now, and will soon start sourcing much of its cassava from its own fields. Saint-Fleur Abellard is a farmer at OGKPS's pilot cassava garden in Cadush. During the third year of the project, the organization will deliver more intensive training and technical support to 100 manioc farmers and OGKPS members to build their capacity to provide raw materials for the bakery and cassaverie and, in so doing, improve their livelihoods. • CAPTION: Mouvement Paysan de l'Acul du Nord (MPA) is a farmer's collective. It is currently working with 600 farming families to support the production, processing and sale of manioc, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and beans. The MPA is working with Sere Pou Chofe (SPC), a credit union based in Acul du Nord, to manage a loan fund designed to help around 150 organized market women improve their sales of agricultural and value-added products, such as manioc flour, tapioca pancakes, and lamidon (manioc candies, pictured). ORGANIZATION: Mouvement Paysan de l'Acul du Nord (MPA). LOCATION: Basberno, Camp Louise, Acul-du-Nord, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: From left to right: Victoire Fleurival, Izna Antoine, Germain Sandia, Cassandra Talabert, Joseline Eteinne and Toussaint Adira.

  • CAPTION: Through the credit program, a collective of 30 women has started making and selling lamidon every day. Here, Victoire Fleurival is shown collecting lamidon for resale. Accounting is done scrupulously. At the end of the year, Victoire and the others who sell the candies will meet with members of the administration to review the collective profits made on lamidon sales; between them, they will then decide how to distribute this and/or reinvest it into the business. ORGANIZATION: Mouvement Paysan de l'Acul du Nord (MPA). LOCATION: Basberno, Camp Louise, Acul-du-Nord, Haiti. • CAPTION: The IAF is supporting the MPA with administrative development, in order to ensure that all participants – especially women – are part of the decision-making process, and also with trainings in agricultural management skills. Doudou Pierre, the MPA’s Executive Director, strongly believes that women should take leadership roles in the organization. For this reason, he has recruited many women for senior positions. Izna Antoine (pictured, left), for instance, attended a special training center back in 1999, and now is one of the MPA’s main trainers. ORGANIZATION: Mouvement Paysan de l'Acul du Nord (MPA). • CAPTION: Osias Elucia is a fisherwoman who owns her own boat. The writing on her boat, 'lavi a pa fasil', means 'life isn't easy' in Creole, and for Osias, it wasn’t always. Thanks to small loans from the MPA, her life has changed. ORGANIZATION: Mouvement Paysan de l'Acul du Nord (MPA). LOCATION: Plage St-Michel, Camp Louise, Acul-du-Nord, Haiti. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Osias Elucia.
    IMG60322.jpg
  • CAPTION: The first time Osias received credit, she put it into buying and selling fish because she had an old boat already. On the second occasion, she put the money towards getting a new boat made. She is currently on her fourth loan, and with her increased business, she can pay the rest of what’s due to the man who built the boat, as well as pay off her loan.
