CAPTION: “I had no experience when I started breeding, I didn’t really know what I was doing”, admits Hue as she prepares feed for her pigs. “I used to spend a long time cooking vegetables”, she continues, “but now I just get raw vegetables from the garden and feed them”. Through the training she’s received, she’s learned how to reduce the time she spends looking after her pigs, how to ensure they have a nutritious diet, how to identify better quality breeds and when the critical periods for growth are. Having applied this newly acquired knowledge, Hue has been able to dramatically increase her productivity and the income she earns through pig breeding. Indeed, she has become known as a local expert, and people in the community frequently come to her for advice. As part of the project, she’s re-trained numerous other Women’s Association members, and has also shared her knowledge with neighbours and the rest of her family.
