  • CAPTION: This is a training of frontline workers (FLWs): auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) and lady health visitors (LHVs). The latter supervise ANMs. Across the state, there are more than 2,000 FLWs. The Government-approved plan states that these individuals must have five days of training on adolescent reproductive and sexual health matters. It is being conducted by Dr Jagannath Hembrom, a ‘Master Trainer’. His role is more as a facilitator than a teacher. There is a pool of 67 such master trainers in Jharkhand, and Dr Jagannath is recognized as one of the best of these.   • CAPTION: The training of frontline workers (FLWs) is very participatory, and it is not held exclusively in classrooms. There is a lot of group work, which the master trainer facilitates, as well as role-plays wherein case studies are acted out. Service providers are taught not only on how to counsel children, but also their parents. EngenderHealth is measuring the effectiveness of what it’s doing in different ways. One involves looking at how those they train perform using a performance to standard tool. Knowledge is tested, counseling is observed, and a check on what services are being given is carried out. If there are gaps, an effort is made to consider how these might be addressed. Another considers how many adolescents (male and female, across different ages) are accessing these services, and which services specifically.   • CAPTION: Dr Jagannath Hembrom is the Medical Officer-in-Charge in Chaibasa in the Jharkhand district of West Singhbhum. The facility here is recognized as the best clinic in the state. In addition to FLWs, he also trains medical officers and outreach workers. He is particularly passionate about working with adolescents. He also serves as a referral point, where sahiyas are unable to answer adolescents' particular questions or meet their particular needs.   • CAPTION: Dr Ram Chandra Soren is the Medical Officer-in-Charge in this area. Here, he is training Community COPE members on how efficiency can be improved. This involves consideration of how best to draw up a work plan, how to gather knowledge, how work can then be done, how follow-ups can be done, how analysis of what’s been done should happen, how information gathering should again happen, and so on. The cycle aims for quality improvement, and is continuous, not a one-time thing. Benchmarks are regularly set and reviewed. The idea that these things should even be discussed is often resisted by the trainees, and this often comes up in a big way during the first day of training. However, as the days unfold, they are encouraged to open up and relax, and generally a much more positive attitude to such discussion evolves by the end of the program. She is also very active in Community COPE as a part of the information system, bringing its work to the public's attention and serving as a bridge to the press. Shruti Deogam, to her left in orange, is the pramud, the elected head of Ghatshila Block (meaning the highest rank in the panchayati raj system), and is also an important representative of the community to the outside in that she links the block to those higher up at the district level.   • CAPTION: Parwati Murmu is one of Community COPE's elected members. She is the mukhya (head of four to five villages) of the Pawra area, and is one of the most active Community COPE leaders. Before getting elected, she had 15 years’ experience in the panchayati raj system. The panchayati raj system dictates that 50% of those elected must be female; in this area, 60-70% are. She also used to be a very active anganwadi worker, and because she is very knowledgeable on relevant health matters she now helps a lot with mother and child health services. Dr Ram has explained that medicines are on the way, so the members are now discussing how the Community COPE team can assist with ensuring people get the knowledge they need on obtaining the necessary medicines from the hospital.   • CAPTION: This group is considering sexual changes, such as the start of the menstrual cycle. Girls tend not to be aware that this is coming up, as parents and even the health system tend not to orient them on it. Then, when bleeding happens for the first time and it shows through a girl’s clothes, she may feel very embarrassed. So adolescents, schools, parents, and other family members all need to be sensitized. A similar example in the case of boys is night emissions after 'wet dreams'. The first time this happens, the boy may be very startled. In the rural Indian cultural context, boys are unlikely to want to talk about it with parents or healthcare professionals, nor are these people likely to want to talk about what's happening for them. Often, boys will consult 'quacks' or low-cost books available in local markets, and may get information that's far from the truth. Again, ways to tackle this must be considered. Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) work at the grassroots level in the health system; they are called sahiyas in Jharkhand, which means 'people’s helping hand'.   • CAPTION: Chung walks to his rice field with neighbouring farmers, who he recently trained on sustainable rice cultivation. Rather than working directly with individuals, We Effect acts in partnership with four community-based organisations (CBOs): the Women’s Association, the Farmers’ Association, the Veterans’ Association and the Youth Union. After strengthening the CBOs’ capacities through leadership training, 25 members from each are selected to receive training to themselves become trainers on innovative and environmentally-friendly cultivation and livestock breeding techniques. Once trained, each individual then transfers his or her technical knowledge to at least two other members of his or her CBO.   • CAPTION: “The biggest benefit is the knowledge I’ve learned and can now apply in real life”, reports Hue. “I’m also more confident about sharing what I know with other people, and in giving voice to my own opinion. More than this, I’ve been able to improve my position within my family. For example, when I make a suggestion about how to look after the pigs, the rest of the family trusts my opinion more than ever before and allows me to follow through on my idea”. Hue goes on to speak of how she also feels empowered to voice her opinion in the wider community. Glen and his fellow students at Parang High School recently attended a climate change workshop run by the local government and facilitated by ACCCRN's implementing partners, ICLEI. This helps to reinforce their knowledge of climate change impacts, mitigation and adaptation, and since attending the workshop they have been more active around their school, practicing mitigation and adaptation solutions and training other students in the same skills.   • CAPTION: Suong and Hang are both on the Board of Directors for Cooperative Huy Tuong II. “We buy animals from farmers, slaughter them and then transport the products to Hanoi to sell”, they explain. “We buy chickens, rice, pork, mushroom and vegetables from our 70 members. Working together like this has helped the farmers to find a good output market”. In 2012, HESDI - We Effect’s implementing partners - established two agricultural service cooperatives, providing training in accounting, marketing, leadership and management to cooperative leaders. One of the key achievements of the project has been the development of an agricultural production value chain network linking local producers to more lucrative and stable markets in Hanoi, bringing mutual benefits to both local producers and end consumers. With limited access to land and outdated agricultural technologies, small-scale farmers struggle to produce enough food for the year. At the start of the project in 2011, almost 50% of households were considered ‘poor’. With support from We Effect, HESDI have provided training on environmental agriculture and improved livestock breeding techniques, helping small-scale farmers to boost productivity and generate higher incomes.   • CAPTION: Although Hue’s family own land, they lack access to water, had limited knowledge of good farming practices and have struggled to cultivate the ground because it’s very dry. Since attending training at the Women’s Association, Hue has learned how to prepare the land, when and how to apply organic fertilisers and which varieties are suitable for dry conditions. All of this together has delivered her much higher cassava and maize yields.   • CAPTION: “I had no experience when I started breeding, I didn’t really know what I was doing”, admits Hue as she prepares feed for her pigs. “I used to spend a long time cooking vegetables”, she continues, “but now I just get raw vegetables from the garden and feed them”. Through the training she’s received, she’s learned how to reduce the time she spends looking after her pigs, how to ensure they have a nutritious diet, how to identify better quality breeds and when the critical periods for growth are. Having applied this newly acquired knowledge, Hue has been able to dramatically increase her productivity and the income she earns through pig breeding. Indeed, she has become known as a local expert, and people in the community frequently come to her for advice. As part of the project, she’s re-trained numerous other Women’s Association members, and has also shared her knowledge with neighbours and the rest of her family. That was the point at which he got his first life-changing surgery, after which he started to receive training from Mobility India.   • CAPTION: Mahila Samakhya takes on young women who’ve been abandoned or sexually abused, and teaches them with a view to mainstreaming them back into society, including the area of sexual and reproductive rights. It is a national-level NGO, and is working in 11 districts in Jharkhand. Last year, EngenderHealth worked with the Government to bring Mahila Samakhya into the Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK) (National Adolescent Health Program). They have since trained 27 Sayogini and district-level trainers on adolescent issues. From these, they identified 14 to train outreach and frontline workers in facilitation. They are now organizing trainings in the field, contributing to demand generation for adolescent health services.   • CAPTION: These are sahiyas attached to Ghatshila CHC who've been trained on adolescent reproductive and sexual health, and in how to communicate with adolescent girls on these issues. At the beginning of the sessions they conduct at the anganwadi center (literally: 'courtyard shelter' in Hindi), they start with a song about the importance of young women taking care of their health as they grow up and how important adolescents are in bringing change in their society in the long run. The song includes mention of how everyone has the power to take decisions on their own health, and to change both themselves and society as a whole (which includes the importance of completing Higher Secondary education).   • CAPTION: ICLEI, ACCCRN's implementing partner in the Philippines, has engaged multiple departments of the Makati City Government to establish a Climate Core Team, various of whose members are seen meeting here. The organisation has trained the team to identify urban systems and communities that are vulnerable to climate change impacts. One of the main achievements of ICLEI's involvement so far has been to raise awareness within the Makati City Government about how climate change can affect the city. The team is now due to put together a City Resilience Strategy, which will essentially entail 'climate proofing' all of the city’s existing plans, resulting in a series of integrated local climate change action plans.   • CAPTION: With limited access to arable land and a poor knowledge of agriculture, Thuan’s harvest was never big enough to feed her family throughout the year, forcing her to purchase food for three of the 12 months. In 2012, she was trained in innovative and sustainable rice cultivation by a fellow member of the Women’s Association. Despite being equipped with the knowledge of better farming techniques, We Effect recognised that low-income households like Thuan’s would be reluctant to risk investing in new, higher yielding rice varieties without first witnessing the benefits. They therefore created local demonstration models by funding a number of low-income households to receive high yielding varieties, enabling these farmers to put into practice everything they had learned. Thuan’s household was chosen as one of the demonstration models, and subsequently her productivity increased from 500 kg to 700 kg a year, giving her family enough food to last throughout all 12 months. Seeing her success, a number of other members of Huy Tuong Commune now follow this model of rice cultivation. LOCATION: Coong Village, Huy Tuong, Son La Province, Vietnam.
