  • CAPTION: Under the Chamkol programme, every disabled member of the community has an Individual Health Plan (IHP). Shantamurthy contracted polio when he was six or seven years old. It left him without the ability to walk. Mobility India supported him to undergo surgery. Following the surgery, its Rehabilitation Therapy Assistants (RTAs) worked with him on an exercise regime, and this helped the pain subside. Since then, he has learned to walk again with the aid of calliper splints. LOCATION: Kallahalli (village), Kasaba (hobli), Chamrajnagar (district), Karnataka (state), India. • CAPTION: Under the Chamkol programme, every disabled member of the community has an Individual Health Plan (IHP). For Rajashekar, who has cerebral palsy, this means following a tailor-made exercise regime. During regular visits to his home, Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant (RTA) Sudha shows his family how to support him with this. LOCATION: Marialla (village), Kasaba (hobli), Chamrajnagar (district), Karnataka (state), India. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: From left to right: Sudhamani R., Rajashekar and Rangaswamy.

  • CAPTION: The Chamkol programme supports the government's response to the health and wellbeing of individuals with or at disk of disability. For Village Rehabilitation Workers (VRWs) like Kumara Naika, pictured here helping Govinda reach his local anganwadi, informal support to service delivery means provision of tailored quarterly training. LOCATION: Badanaguppe (village), Kasaba (hobli), Chamrajnagar (district), Karnataka (state), India. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Kumara Naika (man), Govinda K. (disabled boy) and Puttbassamma (woman).

  • CAPTION: All schools in Kasaba hobli have ramps for wheelchair users, though few were built for the benefit of disabled students; rather, they were put in place for election purposes, to enable disabled voters to attend polling booths during elections. Many, like this one, lie unused and in deteriorating conditions where there may not even be any wheelchair users. Meanwhile, other aspects of school accessibility - such as signs with text that's too small for the visually impaired - go unaddressed. The Chamkol programme therefore provides for School Inclusion Audits and Plans to be carried out by Pupils' Clubs with a view to correcting these flaws. LOCATION: Budhitittu (village), Kasaba (hobli), Chamrajnagar (district), Karnataka (state), India. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: From left to right: Sanjana (above), Pradeep S. • CAPTION: For many years, Mantesh - who has a learning disability - would hardly communicate with other children or even with his parents. His mother Roopa supports him with his Individual Education Plan (IEP), which includes his attendance at his local After-School Club (ASC). This is very important in developing his self-belief. Just ensuring he attends regularly is a challenge, so it helps if his mother drops him there directly herself, and then meets him once the session is over. LOCATION: Mallianpura (village), Kasaba (hobli), Chamrajnagar (district), Karnataka (state), India. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Roopa (left) and Mantesh (right).

  • CAPTION: Under the Chamkol programme, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) like Mahadevamma will soon start receiving focussed training on ways to minimise the risk of disability during pregnancy, childbirth or infancy, on how to identify and respond to suspected impairments and how to care for, nurture and support children with different impairments. LOCATION: Handrakalli (village), Kasaba (hobli), Chamrajnagar (district), Karnataka (state), India. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Mahadevamma B.

  • CAPTION: Veronica walks to school barefoot, along a dirt road. Aside from the discomfort during walking, the lack of shoes also spells hygiene issues because families tend to sleep on the same floors on which they walk; this can easily lead to ear infections. Sometimes, objects even become lodged inside people’s ears. In Veronica’s case, a bean was found inside her ear when cleaning was performed through SignHealth Uganda’s assistance. LOCATION: Lutungu Village, Rakai District, Central Region, Uganda. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Veronica Nampijja.

  • CAPTION: Mahila Samakhya students act out a role-play. In the play, the old lady’s granddaughter has just started menstruating. She is worrying about what’s happening her, so goes to her grandmother and asks why this is suddenly happening to her. The old lady reassures her that it happens to every woman; that it also happened to her, and that there’s nothing to worry about, everything will be alright. The girl who then comes along is playing the role of a sahiya. She is visiting the household, and reassures the girl that it’s a natural process for all young girls, and goes on to explain how to take care of nutritional intake including supplementation during this period, and also how to be clean and hygienic. She then assures her that if she experiences very bad pain, she can come to her for some medicines. LOCATION: Mahila Samakhya, Ratu (block), Ranchi (city), Jharkhand (state), India. • CAPTION: Home-Based Educator (HBE) Sakamma has been able to help eight-year-old Sangeetha, who has cerebral palsy, improve her fine motor skills by playing with various teaching and learning materials. Sangeetha has also learned to recognise regular visitors to her home, and to say simple words like amma ('mother'). Over the lifetime of the Chamkol programme, Sakamma says we can expect Sangeetha to start walking, and also to learn to write a little and turn those single words into full sentences. LOCATION: Amchawadi (village), Haradanahalli (hobli), Chamrajnagar (district), Karnataka (state), India. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Sakamma (left) and Sangeetha (right).

Her destination is not too far from her home, only a kilometre or two; many of her classmates have to walk far greater distances for their education. The lack of shoes can lead to hygiene issues, because families frequently sleep on the same floors on which they walk, leading in turn to objects becoming lodged in the ear and to ear infections. • CAPTION: Adrian is the Chairperson of the Parent’s Support Group (PSG) in the town of Lukaya. PSGs were set up by SignHealth Uganda to help raise awareness about hearing impairment, overcome the superstitions and stigmas that are attached to the condition and help parents overcome the situation of poverty that many of them have so far endured. They have helped to establish several income generating activities, including mushroom growing and soap production, both of which are sold to other community members. Adrian is known as a ‘hero’ among his local community, who often walks great distances over the region’s hills in order to reach out to remote families who have children with hearing impairments. While he remains resolute in his willingness to walk such distances, he explains that if he had a motorbike, he would be able to cover considerably more ground and reach yet more of those in need. He says that he was inspired by his hearing impaired granddaughter. Her experiences convinced Adrian that he would also like to help other families in a similar position, not just his own. LOCATION: Lutungu Village, Rakai District, Central Region, Uganda. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Adrian Mugerwa.

  • CAPTION: John has a hearing impairment, but benefited from Signhealth Uganda’s projects in Lukaya and has since regained most of his hearing function. He is seen here with is mother Margret, after arriving home from school. From school, he has to walk about four kilometres through the town of Lukaya and the bush in order to reach his home village of Lusango. Without shoes, the journey is arduous; his skin’s constant contact with the ground also impacts on his personal hygiene, a factor in causing hearing impairment through ear infections. • CAPTION: Phuong works with her classmates to weed the vegetable garden. Pupils attending this school come from ten different minority villages, some of which are as many as 30 km away. For many, the only way to get to school is to walk. Those that live too far away for this have no option but to sleep at the school during the week and return to their villages for the weekend. Not only does the vegetable produce provide students with a more varied and nutritious diet throughout the week, it also reduces the school’s food expenditure. CAPTION: Nady lives in Nkondora Village, which previously did not have cellular service even though it was so close to the Zambian capital, Lusaka. Now that the new tower has been installed in her village by the project funded by CDC Group, she has means of communication. Nady used to have to walk 5 km, up a tall hill, to get reception on her mobile phone. Now she can spend more time in her shop, where she sells tomatoes and other essential food products.

  • CAPTION: Until the age of five, Naveen - who has cerebral palsy - was confined to his bed. That was the point at which he got his first life-changing surgery, after which he started to receive training from Mobility India. Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant (RTA) Kavitha patiently worked with him on a one-to-one basis, teaching him how to stand, balance and walk. Since then, he has been an enthusiastic participant at his local After-School Club (ASC). • CAPTION: Chung walks to his rice field with neighbouring farmers, who he recently trained on sustainable rice cultivation. Rather than working directly with individuals, We Effect acts in partnership with four community-based organisations (CBOs): the Women’s Association, the Farmers’ Association, the Veterans’ Association and the Youth Union. After strengthening the CBOs’ capacities through leadership training, 25 members from each are selected to receive training to themselves become trainers on innovative and environmentally-friendly cultivation and livestock breeding techniques. Once trained, each individual then transfers his or her technical knowledge to at least two other members of his or her CBO. This is a cost-effective way of sharing knowledge that also serves to strengthen each organisation. LOCATION: Coong Village, Huy Tuong, Son La Province, Vietnam.
